Ban Predictive Policing and Facial Recognition, Says Civil Society (ComputerWeekly.com, Jul 26, 2024)
The coalition – consisting of Open Rights Group (ORG), Big Brother Watch, the Network for Police Monitoring (Netpol) and 14 other human rights-focused organisations – is also calling for an outright ban on biometric surveillance systems like facial recognition, and for all other data-based, automated or AI systems in policing to be regulated to safeguard people from harms and protect their rights.

Police departments can also turn on the facial recognition feature, and program the robot with a list of wanted criminals. "Now if you want something customized, for example, if we had the robot be a security guard at the church, and after hours the pastor only wanted certain individuals to have access to the church, then the facial recognition feature could be activated for those individuals only. It’s not having facial recognition open to the public just capturing people’s faces." The facial recognition feature, as well as listening capabilities, can also be deactivated by the individual client if they choose.

That has allowed law enforcement to experiment with the technology as the city deals with a significant shortage of police officers.
